Huawei HiLink is an
application from Huawei to know the status and monitor Huawei Data Cards. This
is not an essential application but is a very handy app to know the status of
the datacard, data balances etc. Even without the app, the details can be known
using the webinterface, the HiLink app just makes it much easier.
I use a Huawei
PowerFi E8231 Data Card ocassionally. During a recent vacation I used it as my
main internet source and I installed the HiLink app (Android) to know the data balances
and read sms easily.
Result,
- Phone is always hot even when I did not use the phone.
- Battery drains like there is no tomorrow. 6 hours of hardly any use would bring down the battery to "0".
I did not suspect
the app initially. I suspected something is wrong with the phone hardware which
is making it hot and draining the battery. I also thought the battery might be
giving up. I tried restarts, removing and reinstalling sim/memory and batteries
and all those. Nothing helped.
Until - It stuck me
that there is a battery section within the settings. One look at
settings>>battery and it was clear what was wrong. Huawei HiLink was
right on top draining the battery. Normally it was always the screen which was
on top, but now it is Huawei HiLink.
I checked it
multiple times and confirmed it is Huawei HiLink that is draining the battery.
Uninstalled the app and the phone is back to normal.
I think the app
constantly looks for the data card in the background to monitor the status
irrespective of whether the app is open/closed, data card is on/off etc. Result
is excessive use of Wireless Antenna which explains both heating and battery
drain.
Phone in use -
Samsung Note 2 i317 running Android KitKat. I keep the WiFi always on but "Keep Wi-Fi on during
sleep" is set to "Never". This has always been my setting.
Now after the
uninstallation of HiLink, the phone is as good as ever.
Check out these
pictures taken at different times and see how it affected the battery.
